The 4 eternal rules of bathroom design, according to the experts

When creating designer bathrooms, there are times to think outside the box and times to follow the rules. By blending unconventional thinking with a foundation of basic functionality, you can create spaces that look beautiful and feel seamless to use. After all, what’s a designer bathroom if it doesn’t fit its purpose? To help you always create amazing rooms, here are four essential bathroom design rules straight from the experts.

Don’t create a cluttered space

It can be tempting to cram everything into your bathroom, but try to focus on creating space rather than filling it. If you could fit a bath and shower, but it’s going to be a squeeze, don’t do it. It’s not worth piling lots of different items into your bathroom if it’s going to compromise on space, leaving it feeling cluttered and cramped. Plan the basics and only add extra items if you absolutely have the room.

Always prioritise plenty of storage

Don’t forget the practicalities you need to consider when designing a bathroom. Even the most beautiful of bathrooms are rooted in function! One of the most important practical aspects to remember is adding plenty of storage for towels, toiletries, and anything else you think you may need, like a space to hang their dressing gown. Some clever ways to add storage to your space include a mirrored cabinet, cupboards incorporated into the area below the sink, and alcoves in the walls.

Create an ergonomic flow

It almost goes without saying that above all, a designer bathroom should feels pleasant to use. Aesthetics aren’t worth compromising basic functionality! For example, you don’t have to squeeze yourself into a corner to dry off or constantly bash cupboard doors against the wall when opening them. Ensure there’s an ergonomic flow that allows for easy movement around the room, with plenty of space around appliances to move.

Maximise natural light wherever you can

Bathrooms and windows are a tricky mix to get right. You want to feel like you’re in a private space, but you need windows to let in light and open up the room. There are some great tricks to add more glass into your room without sacrificing your privacy. For example, if you don’t have a room above you, a skylight is perfect for allowing plenty of light without compromising privacy. Frosted glass windows are another option, as is planting trees and shrubs outside your windows if you can to prevent people from peering in – just be sure they’re evergreens, or your neighbours could get a surprise come winter!
