How to choose the perfect bathroom taps for your space

Have you decided it’s time to give your bathroom a bit of a revamp? If you’re searching for the perfect taps for your bathroom but keep getting lost in the infinite amounts of options, you’re in luck. Taps are one of the fixtures that make a huge difference in your bathroom or wet room, both stylistically and functionally. At NPM Bathrooms, we take enormous pride in helping our customers elevate and create truly unique bathrooms, and in this week’s blog we’re talking about how you can totally change up your bathroom space with a beautiful new set of taps!

Start with water pressure

Before you even start looking at taps, you’ll need to know what type of water-pressure system you have in your home. This will be one of the determining factors you’ll have to consider when buying your taps. If you have a high-pressure water system, you’ll be able to take your pick from the majority of taps on the market. If you have a lower-pressure water system on the other hand, it’s worth knowing the exact numbers so you can get the most out of your taps.

Count the tap holes

The amount of tap holes will determine how many taps you can have in your sink. The majority of sinks will just have a single hole to accommodate both hot and cold water (this is what’s called a mono mix tap). However, they’re far from the only option – sinks can also have anywhere between one, two and three pre-drilled tap holes.

More traditional sinks will come with two pre-drilled holes, one for hot water and one for cold water. A sink with three pre-drilled holes can accommodate a tap and two handles — one at either side.

Bathtubs usually don’t come with pre-drilled holes, so if it’s bath taps you’re after, you usually get more freedom of choice. If this is the case, then you can arrange to have the holes drilled exactly to your preferred taps specification. If the bath does come with predrilled holes, you’ll need to get the corresponding taps.

Settle on a style

For more traditional bathrooms, you might want to choose taps with the classic cross head handles, ceramic inserts or lever-style handles. These styles will never look dated, and will add the essence of timelessness and elegance to the space. Replacing old taps is also a great way to add new life into your bathroom’s visual appeal if you feel like it’s time for something new, but you don’t want to fully renovate.

Simplicity and functionality are both key ideals in the design of modern bathrooms, which are often recognisable through their clean lines and geometric shapes. That makes mixer taps great additions to any modern bathroom. Wall mounted single lever taps are also a fantastic choice if you’re looking to add some contemporary flare to your space.

Decide on a finish

The finish on the tap is going to really help tie the whole bathroom together, so it’s not always a quick decision to make off-the-cuff. There are many types of finishes on the market, but the most popular ones include:

Chrome

Chances are you’ve seen more of these taps than any other. This is all for good reason however, as chrome is very resistant to scuffs, scratches and general corrosion. As an extra bonus, it’s also easy to clean. It can look beautiful in all interior styles, but it’s best suited for more modern and contemporary styles, as its cool and reflective style creates the clean crisp lines synonymous with modern design.

Nickel

Nickel finishes are a relatively new addition as far as taps go. Nickel provides a look reminiscent of chrome or silver but it has subtle golden hue, and more of a hushed or muted shine. It’s for this reason that nickel can straddle both traditional and modern interiors with ease. It’s a perfect choice for those who want an option that’s slightly left of centre in terms of shade but could easily complement numerous colour pallets.

Ultimately though, when it comes time to decorate your bathroom, it’s all about personal preference! Your bathroom is an extension of who you are; it should be a reflection of what you find relaxing and calming. We understand this here at NPM Bathrooms, which is why we take great care in making our designer bathrooms places that provide our customers with a sense of peace and belonging.
